Meaning of form 26AS
We all are paying income tax and filing income tax returns every year. We pay income tax in may forms either directly and indirectly. Indirect payment of income tax is TDS (tax deducted at source). Our employer deducts our income tax as TDS, our banks deducts TDS on interest income before paying that. If we receive payments from some organisation / company like rent TDS is deducted on that as per applicable rules. In direct tax payment we pay quarterly advance tax based on presumptive income tax calculations.
Income tax department at their end keeps a record of all these payments and deductions electronically in the form of form 26AS. Form 26 AS also has details of tax collected at source (TCS), refund received if any and details of high value transactions in mutual fund, shares and bonds, etc. (as reported by AIR). So form 26AS means compilation of all these tax related transactions related to a PAN card l for a specific financial year as per the Income tax records. In other words form 26AS tax credit statement is a consolidated income tax statement. Form 26AS confirms that your tax deducted / tax paid by you is received by the government.
It is advised to download your form 26AS to recheck the TDS and advance tax paid before filing income tax return. You can also verify TDS certificate issued to you in the form of form 16 / 16A by your deductor against Form 26AS.
